8 Reasons Why Watches Will Always Be More Popular Than Mobile Phones
People think a watch will become a thing of the past with mobile phones such as the IPhone offering greater features and functions compared to a wristwatch. With any new generation, new gadgets evolve. Recent articles explain how watches are being replaced with mobile phones.
The 8 articles below are reasons why this won’t be the case;
- Depending on the brand of watch, batteries can last 2 – 3 years. Some watches such as Casio can last for 10 years. Brands like Citizen Eco Drive work from light charging a capacitor within the watch. Some watches still need to be manually wound or automatic which the use of wrist movement to wind the mainspring. This compared to any mobile phone out performs any battery life. Even if they boast a massive 7 days battery life.
- A wristwatch in certain social networks is classed as jewellery and can often be a status symbol. Many celebrities are renowned for wearing Rolex, Chopard and IWC and often ambassadors of the brand. Some celebrities are sponsored by watch companies to wear the brands on the red carpet. Take for example “Lewis Hamilton” recently signing a deal with Tag Heuer and launching a limited range. Mobile phones on the other hand are not promoted by celebrities as such and seen as a necessity of everyday life and business. How many times have you seen a celebrity get their mobile phone out on the red carpet?
- A watch can be changed depending on the occasion or needs, granted not all watches cost thousands of pounds. Some start as little as £5 so getting a watch that will look good with your outfit is simple and cheap. Mobile phones on the other hand are usually on a contract and you could be possibly stuck with the model for 18 months.
- Limitations of the wristwatch are pretty much zero you can take one anywhere and leave it switched on e.g. a plane, x-ray machine, court room, hospital, exams and many other places. Using a mobile phone in some of the suggest places could see you being arrested.
- The wristwatch will always be popular with people who aren’t tech savvy. Watches are straight forward and simple, most not needing any input by the person wearing one. Mobile phones on the other hand will possibly need the keypad unlocking or buttons pressing to activate the screen.
- Repairability: Having your watch repaired is quite straight forwards most towns or cities have a watch repair business. Most watch repairs (i.e. batteries and straps) can be done within the hour. When your mobile phone breaks it’s usually more cost effective to replace or have a new one from your insurance company.
- Ongoing costs: A watch is more cost effective than a mobile, once a watch is purchased it’s yours and any maintenance of the watch will possibly be a new battery or strap unless you break the watch. Mobile phones on the other hand are more costly to repair and also charged per usage monthly. Also not forgetting the charging of the phone every, or every other day.
- What’s better in an emergency situation? Depending on the situation a mobile phone usually wins, but in different emergencies a wrist watch can outperform a mobile phone. The Breitling emergency which many explorers wear, it can send a radio distress call from anywhere in the world and will alert all types of emergency services land, sea and air. A watch can also be used as a compass and help you navigate your way out of difficulty.

Here’s why watches will be relegated to mere jewelry…
I always have my phone with me. I always keep it charged. I use it all day everyday for calls, texting, web, email, music, and so on. It is an essential tool for my everyday life. So I always have on my person a device that tells time, has timers and stopwatch, acts as an alarm clock with unlimited confiurable alarms, etc. If it breaks I will buy another because I need it. I keep it charged because I need it. I put it in airplane mode and still can play games on a plane. Fact is that a watch would be a separate expense that gives me nothing beyond my phone other than bling. I should probably just buy a bracelet – doesn’t need batteries.
Fine, but your mobile phone is a costly depreciating non asset. Whereas a nice non bling watch need not be expensive to buy, is often a masterpiece of engineering skill, unlke a phone which is just a box of taiwanese silicon chips built cheaply and is designed to be disposable. How many phones compared to watches produced over the years are truly collectable or indeed not obsolete by design? You clearly do not appreciate the finer things in life…………..like skilland fineness
Not only do I agree with BubbaGeek, but I also think the watchlab loses credibility by using such weak arguments. Except for the luxury / trendy and ease of access to time, it has no other valuable advantage. As for your answer Mel, phones are also a masterpiece of engineering skill. You do however use a third argument, which is true: the collectability of watches. When your product starts to be sold to be collected, you know you have a big problem.
